Abstract

This research article explores the multifaceted evolution of 'Historical Consciousness' in the Urdu short story, tracing its journey from early realism to contemporary symbolism. It critically examines how pioneering writers like Premchand, Manto, Rajinder Singh Bedi, and Krishan Chander interpreted the socio-political shifts of the subcontinent. The study further delves into the metaphysical time-scales of Quratulain Hyder, the mythological archetypes of Intizar Hussain, and the socio-moral chronicles of Ghulam Abbas. A significant portion of the article is dedicated to Sami Ahuja’s unique post-colonial cartographic vision, alongside an overview of contemporary writers. By analyzing these literary masters, the article concludes that the Urdu Afsana serves as a vital alternative archive, capturing the psychological and cultural truths of history that official records often overlook.
